Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know.

Real answers about how PetBook works, what it costs, and how it keeps your pet safe.

Accounts & Getting Started

What is PetBook?

PetBook is a digital platform that gives every pet a permanent online identity tied to their microchip. It combines a free pet profile and QR tag with a microchip registry, lost pet recovery network, and optional social features for owners. For professionals, it offers shelter management tools and a veterinary practice operating system (Vet Pro).

Is PetBook free?

Yes. The Forever Free tier includes a permanent digital pet profile, microchip registration, QR code generation, basic medical record storage, community lost pet alerts, and profile visibility controls. There are no time limits or hidden fees on the free tier.

How do I create an account?

Sign up at /login using email and password or Google OAuth. You can choose between a personal account or a shelter account during registration.

Can I register without an account?

Yes. The free QR code generator at /free-qr works without logging in. You just enter your pet's name, species, microchip ID, and email. The QR code is permanent and your pet's profile can be claimed later by creating an account with the same email.

What account types are available?

Personal accounts for pet owners, Shelter accounts for rescue organizations (with bulk management tools), and Vet accounts for veterinary clinics. Service providers — sitters, walkers, groomers, and trainers — can be assigned to pets directly from their management page, making scheduling and appointment booking seamless for both providers and pet owners.

What if I forget my password?

Use the 'Forgot Password' link on the login page. Recovery codes will be sent to your email to reset it.

Do you have a mobile app?

Yes. PetBook for Android and iOS is pending app store verification and will be available for download soon.

Pet Profiles & Microchips

What information is stored on a pet profile?

Each profile stores the pet's name, species (dog/cat/other), breed, color, date of birth, weight, spay/neuter status, allergies, vet clinic information, notes to finder, owner contact info (name, phone, email), and profile photos. All fields are optional — you only fill in what you want.

Is a microchip required?

No. You can create a pet profile without one and add the microchip ID later. However, linking a microchip makes the profile permanent and enables the federated lookup across multiple registries if your pet gets lost.

Can I register a pet before the chip is implanted?

Yes. The 'pending chip' option lets you create the full profile now and add the microchip ID once it's implanted. The profile and QR code work immediately.

What microchip registries does PetBook integrate with?

PetBook searches its own registry and is actively working to unify HomeAgain, Avid, AKC Reunite, 24PetWatch, PetLink, Fi Nano, and other registries into a single lookup.

What happens to the profile if my pet is rehomed?

The profile stays permanently tied to the microchip. Ownership can be transferred to the new owner, preserving the pet's full history — medical records, photos, and all data. Nothing is lost.

Are pet profiles public by default?

Yes. By default, profiles are public — your pet's QR code links directly to their public page so anyone who scans it can see their info. When you're signed in, you get access to an enhanced version of the page where you can post updates, edit the profile, share photos, and manage settings.

QR Tags & Hardware

How does the free QR code work?

There are two ways. If you sign up and register your pet, a free QR code is generated automatically for every pet on their profile. If you don't want to create an account, go to /free-qr, enter your pet's name, species, microchip ID, and email — PetBook generates a unique QR code you can download, print, or share. Either way, the QR code never expires and always points to the latest profile data.

Can I update the profile after generating the QR code?

Yes, if you register with a microchip — the QR code is permanently tied to it and never needs to change. Profile updates (photos, contact info, etc.) reflect immediately on scan. If you register without a microchip first, the QR code will update once you add the microchip later, then become permanent.

What physical tags are available?

The PetBook QR Tag ($25) is a durable, waterproof, custom-printed double-sided collar tag with your pet's unique QR code. The Fi Series 3+ GPS Collar ($175, MSRP $250) adds live GPS location tracking, escape alerts, fitness monitoring, and LTE-M connectivity. The Fi Nano Microchip ($25) is an ISO-compliant chip with lifetime registration on both PetBook and Fi networks.

What happens when someone scans my pet's QR tag?

Scanning the QR code opens the pet's public profile page, showing the pet's name, photo, and any information you've chosen to display. If the pet is marked as lost, the scanner sees an alert and can contact you or local shelters directly.

Can I customize the QR tag design?

Yes. Physical QR Tags can be customized with different designs, colors, and your own uploaded images or pet photos during checkout.

Lost Pet & Recovery

How does the lost pet system work?

Toggle your pet's status to 'Lost' from their profile. PetBook immediately notifies nearby community members, sends alerts to local shelters, and triggers a notification whenever the pet's QR tag is scanned (including the GPS location of the scan). The system also marks the pet as lost in the federated microchip lookup.

Who gets notified when I mark my pet as lost?

Nearby PetBook community members within your area receive a push notification. Registered shelters in your region are also alerted. Anyone who scans your pet's QR code sees a prominent lost-pet alert with your contact instructions.

Is the lost pet alert system free?

Yes. Lost pet alerts are included in the Forever Free tier. There are no additional costs for flagging a pet as lost or notifying the community.

Medical Records & Privacy

What medical information can I store?

You can store vaccination dates, vet visit history, allergies, behavioral notes, clinical notes, and file attachments (lab results, imaging). Records can be linked to a specific veterinary clinic.

Are medical records encrypted?

Yes. Medical data is protected with enterprise-level encryption. Even on the free tier, your pet's health information is secured.

Can my vet access my pet's records?

Yes. You can invite your vet by email from your pet's edit page. The vet receives an invitation to claim the connection and access your pet's medical records. You can revoke access at any time.

Can multiple people manage the same pet?

Yes. The Pet Lover tier supports multiple-owner household access, allowing family members or co-owners to manage the same pet profile.

Pricing & Subscriptions

What's included in the Forever Free tier?

Digital pet profile and identity, microchip registry and lookup, basic medical record storage, community lost pet alerts, QR code generation, custom pet merchandise access, and public/private profile controls. No expiration. No credit card needed.

What does Pet Lover ($10/month) add?

Everything in Forever Free, plus rich social adventure logs, unlimited photo and video uploads, priority community support, exclusive partner discounts, advanced health tracking, and multiple-owner household access.

Is there a shelter/organization plan?

Rescue Pro ($50/month per organization) is coming soon. It will include all Pet Lover features organization-wide, bulk profile management, ownership transfer system, team member collaboration, adoption inquiry dashboard, verified organization badge, and custom branding.

What is Vet Pro and how much does it cost?

Vet Pro is a full veterinary practice operating system (ERP) currently in private beta. It includes integrated patient records, clinical identity sync, client communication, inventory and pharmacy management, smart appointment scheduling, billing and insurance claims, and multi-clinic enterprise support. Pricing is targeting $149/month per clinic for up to 6 users, with additional seats at $9/month each. Join the waitlist at /vet-registration.

Can I cancel my subscription anytime?

Yes. There are no long-term contracts. Downgrading reverts your account to the Forever Free tier. You keep all your pet's data and profiles.

How does Stripe work with PetBook?

Stripe handles all payment processing on PetBook. Subscriptions (Pet Lover, Rescue Pro, Vet Pro) are billed through Stripe and managed from your billing settings. For the community marketplace, service providers connect their own Stripe accounts so payments go directly to them — PetBook never holds provider funds. This means bookings are processed securely end-to-end without PetBook acting as a middleman on transactions.

Community Features

What are PetBook Communities?

Communities are location-based networks where pet owners can book appointments with local providers (sitters, walkers, groomers, trainers), find playdates and neighborhood meetups, discover adoptable pets from local shelters, and follow other pets' adventures.

Is the community available everywhere?

Community features launch in select cities first. Providers and pet owners in active cities can connect, book services, and arrange meetups. /petbook-communities shows which cities are supported.

How do I book a service through PetBook?

Browse providers in your community, view their profiles and ratings, check availability, and book appointments directly through the platform. There are no middlemen or commissions — you connect directly with the provider.

How do provider reviews work?

After booking and completing a service, you can rate the provider on a 5-star scale and leave a review. Reviews are public and help the community make informed decisions.

Can I find adoptable pets in my area?

Yes. Shelters post adoptable pets with detailed profiles, photos, and adoption information directly to the local community feed. You can browse available animals and contact the shelter through the platform.

Shelters & Rescues

How does batch registration work?

Shelters can upload hundreds of pets at once using a CSV file or the dynamic batch form. Download the template, fill in pet details (name, microchip, species, breed, color, etc.), upload, and PetBook creates profiles for all of them. Validation reports tell you if any rows have errors.

What happens to a pet's profile after adoption?

One click transfers the full profile — including medical history, photos, and records — to the adopter. The microchip link stays intact. The shelter maintains a connection for post-adoption support if both parties agree.

Can I manage my shelter's team?

Yes. Assign specific pets to volunteers or staff with granular permission roles. Everyone gets the access they need without compromising data security.

Do shelter pets get QR tags automatically?

Yes. Every pet registered through a shelter account automatically gets a QR code that can be printed and attached to kennels, adoption materials, or collars.

Veterinarians & Clinics

What is Vet Pro?

Vet Pro is a cloud-based veterinary practice operating system currently in private beta. It replaces legacy practice management software with unified patient records, AI-driven scheduling, inventory and supply chain management, revenue operations (billing, insurance claims), and multi-clinic enterprise support.

Can I import data from my existing system?

Yes. Vet Pro supports migration from 20+ legacy practice management systems. The concierge team handles the data import.

How do I get early access to Vet Pro?

Join the waitlist at /vet-registration. We are rolling out to select clinics during the private beta phase.

How much does Vet Pro cost?

Target pricing is $149/month per clinic for up to 6 users, with additional seats at $9/month each. Subscription and billing are managed through Stripe. This is the target during the beta period and may adjust at general launch.
